BiH = Bosnia and Hercegovia (I = and) UNPROFOR = United Nations Protection Forces These is the name from the UN forces on their peace keeping mission in Croatia and BiH. Their mission is different in the two countries, in Croatia they have to protect the cease-fire agreement signed in the January 1992 between Croatian government and the so-called self-styled government of Serbian Krajina (also known in Croatia as the occupied zone's). In BiH they have to protect the humanitarian aid convoys and efforts around the whole country. In both cases they are only allowed to use their weapons to protect themselves if they are in aimed fire. UNPA = United Nations Protected Area The 4 area's in Croatia which are declared UN protected zone and which should have been demilitarised by now. In 3 of the 4 UNPA's the UNPA border is nearly simular with the front-line of January '92, since then the forces of Serbian Krajina occupied some more territories (the so- called Pink zones), this are the UNPA's East (near the Serbian border (including Vukovar and Baranja)), North (under Karlovac up to nearly Sinj in the west and just North of Knin in the South) and South (South of sector North and down to about 50 km south of Knin). The last sector is UNPA West, in which 1/3 is in Serbia Krajina and 2/3 in Croatia, the front-line is around Pakrac and this sector lays app. 125 Km East of Zagreb in west Slavonia. UNCivPol = United Nation Civil Police, this are normal Police agents from all over the world, which operate not like UNPROFOR in national battalion, but in small international groups in order to protect Human Rights in the UNPA's and to monitor and help people in any way which UNPROFOR can't provide. IFRC = International Federation of Red Cross ICVA = International Co-ordination of Voluntary Agencies, they (try) to co-ordinate the relief activities of non-governmental (NGO) organisations in this region (as they do and did elsewhere around the world) Until so far the UN terms, their are a lot more (like UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO) as their are military terms within UNPROFOR, but most are easy or known and other I will describe each time I have to use them. ARK = Anti ratna kampanje (Anti war campaign), a group of former students, young intellectuals, journalist, feminists, greens, which started in July 1991 (before the war), the promote antiwar thinking, non-conflict resolution, draft resistance, human rights, etc.. Not a Peace organisation in the meaning going on the streets and the front-line saying the people that they have to live in harmony. It is more a movement from critical people in Croatia, which are not agree with the war (Neither in Croatia, neither in BiH), although they accept that Yugoslavia from 3 years ago don't exist anymore, and the politics of all the ruling politicians in these countries. Out of ARK in Zagreb, regional groups all over the country are build up in the last year, as well as organisation as Suncokret, working in refugee camps and the Center for Women Victim of war. ARKzin = The monthly magazine of ARK, started in 1991 with 500 copies, the last number (Dec. 93) came out in 10.000 copies and is sold in every kiosk in the country. ARKzin is one of the 4 only independent newspapers in Croatia. ZAMIR = literally Za Mir = For Peace.
