Most of the group is now working at private houses of old people, to make it possible for them to get through the winter. There are now 16 volunteers, the last group were only 8, but 6 stayed over from the first two groups and a few of them have make the decision to stay for a long long time. I look around in the "living room" of the volunteers, a lot has changed in the last two weeks that I wasn't here. The room is now colourful with drawing on the wall and the kitchen is filled with all different the humanitarian aid you can find in this countries. Beside the well known "Danish Feta", they have now chocolate milk from the Netherlands (never know that that was selling so bad), tin can with spaghetti forms in tomato sauce called "Ghostbusters food" or something (after the film, according the label you should eat before you get slimmed), herring in tomato sauce from the UK, pate from Italy, powder milk from Switzerland, nearly walking "boursin" cheese from France and so on, most of the products have just passed the expel date or will pass it in the coming 5 days. I planned a meeting at 9.30 with the "major" on the other side, yesterday just before we left Simon has given him the newest Danas with the article about him and I expect that he wouldn't be so happy with it, and since I brought the journalist I feel that it was my personal mistake as well. The driver who could bring me to the "other side" is not showing up until nearly 10.15, so I have the change to drink a Cola with Annette and Eric in Scorpia, the UNOV office has become a real working place now and that implies that Scorpia lost some of their standard guests. On "the other side" my driver leaves immediately, she has to bring the girl from CARE to Okucani and Goran, a young guy from Japaga will do the translation. Goran wants to start his agriculture study in Beograd soon (he is especially interesting in ecological farming I found out some weeks ago), but he needs to have his paper from the Croatian part of Pakrac, proofing that he finished the high school two years ago. And of course some money to rent a room in Beograd and pay for his study, since everything what his family had is standing in the Croatian part of Pakrac. The "major" complains about the article as I thought, it really put him in a difficult position, not only are half of the things he said in our in-formal meeting the other time, quoted in a wrong context, but some of the things are simply made up and he absolute disagree that his name is under it. I tell him about the difficult political situation of our work at the moment in Croatia, after the shooting of Maslenica bridge and the killing of the 4 police cops in Pakrac they other week. He reacts that the story about the killing on this side of the front-line is totally different, he have heard that those police cops have killed eachother, after drinking too much, the same think happened in Okucani just a few days before. Of course he can't proof that story, but advise me to ask UNPROFOR. Later on the day I tell that story to some other Internationals and they say that they wonder if that is what has happened, but that the true is hard to find, since CIVPOL arrived to late at the spot, all the trails which could lead to finding out what happened were already gone, due to the large amount of people which were standing around. The "major" tells me that his football team became last in the football match last weekend, they didn't had any money to pay to the referees and I had to admit that I still haven't got the material for his football team (shoes, jogging suits, etc.) together. But that there has started some actions in the Netherlands to help us with his idea of building up this free radio station in his village. We also agree that we will try to send the first group of volunteers to his part of Pakrac in two weeks from now. The colonel of UNPROFOR Has given his green light, he is very charmed by the work of our volunteers and our workcamp is suddenly declared an official UN activity, Plazter was willing to lent us money for the building materials and besides from the fact that we still have to find good trained volunteers, nothing stands in the way. During the lunch, which is specially prepared for me without meat, we get more personal and we found out that he and me are having an age difference of just a few months, I thought that he was at least 5 or more years older than me. After lunch my driver arrives, together with the regional field officer from UNICEF, she has complains about the list he has given her with the materials for the schools on it, according to her you can rebuild 4 schools with that and not the agreed 2. The "major" puts on his most lovely and childies face and looks at her as a dog which is asking for a doggie candy. She melts and agrees with the lists. After that we went to visit one of the schools and drop into one of the coffee afternoon of the local women. On the table are standing all kind of breads and candies made from the humanitarian aid, some of them have to Serbian 4 C weapon of arms on them, on the wall are hanging drawings with the same symbol, next to drawing of AC-DC, Dynamo Zagreb and Public Enemy. We just are planning to leave when the priest of the local Orthodox church walks in, he refused just a week ago one of our volunteers to repair the mosaic on the Orthodox church which stands in the Croatian part of Pakrac and which is heavily damaged. He is giving us a long speech stating that his people needs help and that he remembers the nice flour they got after the second world war from the States, bread made with that flour tasted like cake.
