Since the machine has been travelling together with me for nearly a year now, and received as few bullets in that period, which otherwise would have been sticking in my flesh, I had that feeling from okay this is it, he would work anymore and I have to look for funding to get a new one. And just at that moment it started to work again as you see. Nevertheless it is time to start looking to replace my dear friend since he start to warn me that one of this days he won't start again. Anyway the day started with waiting at the Peace center for Ibrahim from Sarajevo, he promised to come this morning around 10, but after 2 hours we couldn't resist it anymore and we called the people where he was staying. They said that he left for Split in the early morning to organise something for his travel back to Sarajevo and that he indeed said something about having a meeting about a ZaMir system in Sarajevo. Via some Humanitarian organisation Ibrahim organised a satalite telephone and when we can find the money for phoning and the hardware we can start a network in Sarajevo. Just after 12 the people from Sittard, my hometown arrived, they, an official delegation from the town council and a journalist from the regional newspaper came to Zagreb yesterday evening in order to hand over 7500 guilders for Suncokret, my hometown exists this year 750 year and so they have a big party. Since I am, as they, the delegation, told me, not totally unknown at home the green party couldn't resist to spoil a bit of the fun to ask support for one guy from Sittard which was further away in a war region. And surprise, surprise they decided positive. With them I drove back to Pakrac, to have some more time there tomorrow. When we passed Gaj, just a few kilometer before Pakrac they started to get surprised and didn't wanted to believe that we were driving through the village already. The sun was already under and most of the first ruins were invisible. A kilometer (and about 50 destroyed houses) further they started to recognize the ruins between the trees. When we drove into the town of Pakrac they started to admit that although they had prepared themselves very well, they couldn't imagine that the destruction in Croatia could have been that bad. I let them drive to Scorpia to find out were Duda had her mariage party, but for the first time since I arrive in Pakrac some months ago Scorpia was closed. So we went to the school, but I could only find the 5 police agents there, which are staying in the room next to our volunteers, they are from outside Pakrac and as always didn't know anything. Just at the moment that I thought, shit, now I am in Pakrac and still I am missing the party from Duda, somebody came up the stairs and yes it was a volunteer who just arrived back from the party, he told me to go over the train rails and then follow a small path through the bushes until I hear music and there it was. With my guests, who couldn't imagine that we it would be absolute no problem if they came along with me, I arrived some minute later at the fire station of Pakrac and it was true what Duda told me, the whole place was full with people, at least 300 or 400. I found Duda and her brand new husband at the most important place and kissed her, nearly three time (which is the habit in my hometown, but also in the Serbian orthodox church, so absolute wrong to do in Croatia), but just in time I remembered it and instructed my delegation. Since inside the was no place anymore we had to sit out side, which wasn't that big problem, some women brought us a few bottle of rakija and soup, big plates with meat and one pivo after another. My delegation couldn't imagine that this was the front-line (the real confrontation line lays about 60 meter further south from the fire station) and that people could have such a party, after they just saw all those destroyed houses. Like always around 12 some guys started to get wild and although Duda's farther had specially asked everybody not to bring weapons, the party couldn't be a party without any shooting. I saw with a half eye how the guy behind Berry, one of the delegation members was loading a pistol and was anyway not surprised when the first shots went of. But Berry nearly jumped half a meter in the sky. "That are practise bullets ?" he asked me back on his chair, "No, they are shooting with sharp", and the next round was fired, behind the guy I saw somebody preparing an uzi for firing and decided to go inside for dancing. When I returned outside some 15 minutes later, the whole building was surrounded by UNPROFOR soldiers, which stood with the jeeps on the four corners of the building, their machine guns aimed at us and were busy body searching all the man who stood in front of the building. My delegation members decided that it was time to sleep and I asked Vanja if she could bring to the school, she anyway was going in that direction. Later I heard that when the passed the river on the small path at of the bushes an UNPROFOR petrol jumped on them with the night glasses and m-16 ready to shoot. My delegation was surprised that Vanja stayed so cool, but from Vanja they heard that I just send two jeeps with soldiers home who nearly were in fight with the people on the party. It is just were you are getting use to you know.
