It is almost a year ago that I visit the city for the last time and things have really changed since then. As one of the small town directly after the front-line cities and villages, Djakovo was overcrowded with soldiers, it looked more like a huge army barrack than a small town. Now the soldiers are back in the barracks and the officers club at the upper side of the road of Vesna's parents. The town cooled down and you have to really search for somebody in uniform. Also some of the old school friends of Vesna, who last year told proudly that they became prof's in the army has decided that the war and the camouflage uniform is over for them and they left the army in the last months. Vesna and I bought the Slavonia monthly paper, since the should be a huge article in there about ARK, at least according to the front-page, were it stood "Does Croatia needs an anti war campaign" or something simular. The article was the leading article in the magazine, the header "Serbs, feminists, left-wings leads peace movement in Croatia" was in deed a flag for the whole article. Besides those three groups, the article showed that the were also lines with anarchists, environmentalists and more over ARK has a computer connection with Beograd, with the center for anti war activities there, which is according the article like ARK paid by the Soros foundations, the well known American-Hungarian Jew and which is in Croatia also run by the well known human right fighter and Jew Puhovski. The article gave all that inside information about ARK and it's members as been published in the last month by Danas and Vjesnik. The was no factual untrue in the article, only the whole story in itself was a little strange, although not directly said every body and every group mentioned in it could be seen as enemy of the state, it made me think back to the old days, when the socialists government let simular articles been published. An article like this shows that the way to democracy and a somehow neutral press is a very long one. If you are not with them you are against them. The good thing about the article was the free publicity it gave, as example of the mis behaviour of ARK they copied an advertisement of ARK about refusing the army and the number of the hot-line were you can get information about refusing the army, it would have cost a lot of money to get such an advertisement into that paper in the first place, knowing that they probably never would have placed it any way. This newspaper is by the way under control of Glavas, the head of the Slavonia region, although he is refusing to admit it he is one of the many Hercegovinian in Slavonia, who were deported in the early 50'ties from the South to live here. Most people from original Slavonian background are not that happy with them if you talk with them, in Osijek stands on the post office, "Give us back our Serbs, you can get our Hercegovinians", which is a clear expression of the feelings. Glavas took over control of "Glas Slavonia" (the daily Slavonia newspaper "Voice of Slavonia") about two years ago during Christmas, he just went in with some of his armoured guards and announce that he was now in charge, all editors, which were obvious too "left-wing or peaceful" for him were dismissed or putted back wards in their carrier. And still and the front cover from "Glas Slavonia" stands "war edition" even when the war in Osijek can be considered as being long gone. In the rest of the country a lot happened today, again they tried to open one of the bridges around Zadar, Radic one of the ministers went down to do it, since Tudjman is in his summer palest on Brijuni near Pula. There he had some meetings in the sun with among others a representative of the Israeli government, who said that Croatia is a very tolerant country, especially towards all the Muslim refugees. In Zagreb a commander of the USA, Sheeman, passed by to have some chats with Susak, some rockets landed on Zadar and the hinterland. And I walked with Vesna through Djakovo to visit some places which remember people on a war which is long gone, on the grave yard we visit the part were the Jewish people were buried who died during the second world war in one of the Utasi detention camps, small black iron signs with only the name of the victim on it and the town they probably came from, all covered by plants and flowers. The remainings of the partisan monument on the same place, the big red star is removed, but the concrete bases is still standing. In front of it they have now placed a big wooden cross to remember all the soldiers who have been killed during the last war, which is still going on. We visit the statute of the local "communist' hero Ivan Goran Kovacic (democratic socialist as he called himself), who dead very young in 1943 under very strange conditions, when his aeroplane was shot down on his way to a partisan meeting. He was besides leader of the youth movement a famous poet, his statute, about 3 meters high is one of the only real communist statutes which I have seen in the last year. His portret can also been found on the 200 HDR stamp, which makes him one of the only "partisan" figure heads who is still honoured. After that we walked through the park of the 88 trees, one of the present the Yugoslav people gave to Tito after he dead, in nearly every town and village you can find these parks, like the one in Djakovo, they haven't been really taken care of in the last 10 years.
