This is thanks to the moderate behaviour of the citizens here in the village, by the way, here on Brac HDZ also didn't won the election, one of the moderate social democrat parties had the majority here. Talking about Serbs and Serbian belonging in Croatia, I wonder what will happen in the next weeks, Tudjman had his press conference yesterday and he was everything except moderate, it looks if the Krajina Serbs shoot the last days directly on him, rather than on Maslenica bridge. For over 100 days the Krajina army is now shelling on Zadar (here on the Island I have heard that the Croatian army mostly shoot a few rounds first, but that I have heard of course over a bottle of wine and I can't proof) and on other cities, but the shelling from the last days on the bridge trickered a reaction, which I more or less didn't expected, but what can you expect in this war. Anyway Tudjman said that Serbs in Croatia shouldn't be surprised that the Croats would react strongly on them after this act of barbarism. This was the main point in his press conference yesterday. The Croatian government, according to Tudjman has done their utmost best in the last weeks to show that they are peaceful towards the Krajina Serbs and willing to live in harmony with them and than they react this way, again it must be clear for the world who are the real aggressors. During the same press conference he, Tudjman, also announced that the new money of Croatia will be called Kuna and not Kruna, as was decided earlier. As reason was given that the 4 bad years in Croatian history during the second world war couldn't rule out the good peaceful years in the long Croatian history. That in the whole history of Croatia only in those 4 years there was an currency, which was called Kuna seems to be forgotten. The name Kuna, which is a type of water rat comes from long long ago, when the skin from this animal was used as a type of exchange material, so I was not really fear saying that there was never a currency called Kuna, hundreds of years ago people in this area exchanged the skins of Kunas for products. The last important item in his press conference was the defending of the new boat, a presidential yacht, which will be specially build for the president. For the first time in history, Tudjman said, the Croatia flag is seen on the Mediterranean sea, Croatia has no really admiral ship and as ever normal grown up nation this should be changed soon. What is a navy of a serious country without it. So beside on train, a aeroplane, a palest, a summer house on Brijun, now the president of Croatia will also soon have his own luxes boat. Croatia is really becoming a normal country. From Povja we went for shopping in Selca today, which one of the bigger towns on Brac and know for his nice white stones, the told me that from Selca stones were brought to New York for a monument or something in or around the UN building. Selca is also the town which wanted to honour Genscher for his part in the international recognition of Croatia. Just after the recognition some famous people came to Selca to have an official manifestation during which the stone on which the statue of Genscher should be place was place in front of the big Church in the town. Genscher seems to be out, since the stone is gone and nobody in the town knows if the monument ever will be build or not. You can see how short fame can be. In Omis a few days ago I saw the Macro Polo 1, a remember the boat since there were sticker of UNCHR on it and other things which made me think, today I found out that it is a kind of peace boat, which is cruising down the Dalmatian coast to make music against the war. The group "Mir Sada", which are mostly Italian activists, but it seems that they also are joint by some Germans, Italians, French, somebody from Japan and even some Americans, who were planning to go to Sarajevo to have a huge peace meeting there at the 7th of this month, still haven't yet left Split. Beside the about 500, who we saw arriving on Monday there has come about the same about more, a lot less than the 10.000, from which it was original said that they should come. The reason of not leaving Split is obvious, although the organisers have letters of guarantee from Franjo Tudjman and Mate Boban (president of the Croatian people of Herceg Bosna, West Hercegovina) that they can safely travel over all roads which are under control of HV (Croatia) and HVO (Hercegovina), this is not enough to safe guard the safety all the way to Sarajevo. To come there you also have to pass Bosnian Serbian and Bosnian Muslim controlled areas and they seems to have no guarantee from them, so UNPROFOR made rather clear to them that it was more clever to stay in Split and not try to go to Sarajevo. This resulted in a newspaper heading in a Croatian newspapers that the ""peace loving" UNPROFOR forbids peace markers to go to Sarajevo". I must honestly say that I am relieved by this reaction of UNPROFOR, I was and still am very doubtful of this peace initiative and see it more as media stunt than as a serious try to establish peace in BiH, firstly because of the fact that the group is to small to really make an impact, but more because of the fact that it comes far too late. Not that I say that peace loving people shouldn't come to this area, but they can do much more useful things than sitting in a bus and walking around in Sarajevo. Bok I Mir from Zagreb, Wam P.S. I also hear that the telegrams I send yesterday to Zagreb in order to pay my rent for the next half year (my trip to Brac was very sudden and not really planned) didn't arrive, problems with the telephone lines, so I hope I still have a house when I return to Zagreb. ------------------------------------------------------ Zagreb Diary can be found on a lot of different electronic networks, it is copyright free and can be ported to any network or other means of communication you like, but please drop my a line, you can reach by sending a message to wam@zamir-zg.comlink.de or wam@zamir-zg.comlink.apc.org.
