Today there seems to have been another meeting of NATO in Brussels during which again the possibility is been discussed of air power. The American helicopters seems to have been circling around Mount Igmun and the other strategical hill in Sarajevo to see if the Serbian troops were really withdrawing from the place as been agreed in the last days. According to what I heard in the public opinion the sudden willingness to withdraw so fast from the mountain was highly pressed by the threat of the USA to bring in air power. You never really know of course. Anyway as soon as the Bosnian Serbs will have cleared their positions UNPROFOR will take them. They are already on the bottom of the hills. And what in the hack those a decision of NATO means, of course one of the specialists of the Pentagon shown today that the fire power and precision has been a lot improved since the golf war, but must we trusts all that. Just before the golf war they, the same specialists explained on CNN and other media how accurate and great they were, and that the weapons of today were actual not the weapons of today, but those of tomorrow, like soap powder of today is according to the commercials the soap powder of the future. Until they improved it and somebody who is still using the soap powder of yesterday (which was the powder of tomorrow when he or she bought it) is looked up on if he or she is using the soap powder of the middle ages. If you still follow it, now they tell us that the high technical weapons of the golf war are from a old generation, they improved their bombs in the last two years so much that yesterday's weapon technology is for kids. Dear specialist of the Pentagon, if you compare your super sonic, or what ever, laser guided bombs are the state of the art of today and your pershings and other super things are old fashion weapons, the armies here must fight with weapons out of a time you consider as the stone age (beside the MIG 22 (present from the USSR to equalise the debts a few years ago) and the famous T-84 home-made yugo tank, the best one in the business). Still those weapons are very useful for their job, namely killing people and that's were it is all about with weapons isn't it. Anyway the NATO have decided and tomorrow or even already today new aeroplanes and fighter jets will be brought from the German airstrips to the bases in Italy and the aircraft carriers in the Adriatic sea. But unless the former (Vietnam War) draft resister Clinton wants to make all decision again alone, like those 22 pershing the other month on Baghdad the change that those NATO air support will really been used will take a while. NATO can decided what ever they want, if those war machine will been used under the UN flag first the security council have to agree, and I don't see the Chinese and the Russians very willing at this moment. A German reporter reacted also the about same way, his words can maybe used to describe the feeling, this decision of NATO is according to him only interesting for the historical writers who after the war will analyse how the west failed to help, at least NATO and Clinton have put the record straight again, they have got their note in the history books now, they were willing to help. But for the people in Sarajevo it wouldn't be of much help, still quoting the same reporter. For those who are interesting in the adventures of the Mir Sada activists, the latest news, although we don't get that directly in Croatia, we have to dig it up via international contacts. About 1200 people arrived last week in Split, about 600 from them tried to make their way through to Sarajevo, but got stocked in Prozor ("window" in Serbian and Croatian), they now seems to be on their way back to Mostar. At least some body told me today that Karadzic of all people has guarantee them safe passing from Prozor to Mostar. Everybody who knows the frontlines a bit in that area will really be surprised what Karadzic has to do with it, since the area which they must pass in under Muslim control, but let's not be surprised. Most of the other Mir Sada activists stay or in Split or went to one of the Island, but also a lot of them seems to have left the country already again. Let's be positive for ones and say that at least the Italians were able to mobilise a lot of people in no time and prepare a lot of them very well over the last weeks in non-violent conflict resolution and so on (and that is more than most UNPROFOR soldiers got before they come here). In the main time most of Zagreb lays on his back in the sun (not today, since a rains a bit) somewhere on the Adriatic coast, the city is empty or at least a lot more empty than in the weeks before. There of course at least 100.000 people which can't get out, refugees and displaced people, although their children maybe are send on "a holiday in peace" in Austria. The last months you saw this German posters everywhere in Zagreb "Ferien im Frieden" (Holidays in Peace). I wonder if the organisation who paid for it to hang them in Zagreb really thought for one split second that citizens of Croatia would be able to give a lot of money for this action or that it was just to show the people here that some organisations abroad are really organising something. By the way talking about the billboards and posters in Zagreb, more and more German commercial posters are hanging here on the billboards.
