The police dropped by, but understood after a while that it wasn't big fun for them anyway, since everybody spook English. Some weeks ago at a simular situation they stayed and try to impress the women, girls on the party by showing their guns and telling the big stories. Now they were gone in about 10 minutes. They also felt a little stupid about the refusal of their police chiefs, but after the shooting of yesterday afternoon, which went on, not as active, but still, until far in the night, everybody could understand that it wasn't that safe as we sometimes think it is. From the "other side" we heard today that Babic certainly won, also in Okucani and Pakrac he got more than half of the votes. We talked this morning what that would mean for our project. One of the things can be that all the officials we had talked to in that area are going to be replaced by new ones. A few of this new ones are probably people who work for parts of the Care or UNOV project in the past. Especially does who work on projects which were not "really" approved by the local authorities at that moment. Some we went over the files to find out how everything went with them in that period. Today there are elections in Beograd and the rest of Serbia. It is clear that Milosevic never can win as much as Tudjman won during the elections here, it is even an open question at this moment with whom he has to co- operate if he don't get the full majority he is hoping for. We are wondering how the combination between Vuk and Vesna will work out, a Dutch newspaper quoted him on one of it last rallies and again it shows that Vuk is NOT the peaceful white pigeon most of the western media wants him to be. As far as the quote was real he would have said that Mostar and Pakrac (and a third obvious important city, from which I forgot the name) soon will be Serbian again. Nice moment to say it at the moment that his fellow-party member, Vesna Pesic, "leader" of the centre for anti war activities is involved, as centre, in a co-operation with ARK in the Pakrac region. And that co-operation is not aimed at taking over the control of the Croatian part of Pakrac by the Serbians from Krajina, but to start reconciliation between the two groups. So to get my mind clear I have take a quote out of a speech of Vuk and send it to them for a reaction. The problem is that we here at this side are not always if those quotes in newspapers and press releases are real or not. Today a delegation from the Swiss parliament should come to Pakrac. Besides that they informed us they also inform the town council and asked them if they could organise for them a visit on the "other side". Which they, to our surprise, did. Since we didn't know precisely when this people would arrive we took a strategically position in front of Skorpija, with a big coffee, in the winter sun, it looks like spring and the shooting from yesterday is totally over. After a hour, watching the girl from Skorpija making a Christmas decoration outside on the window of the pub in the form of a big "U" and a lot of red-white-blue bands. When we started to laugh about it, Jura told us that that is the symbol of the home-defenders from Pakrac and that with Christmas they all will come to his pub. Around the corner of the house where the Austrian live Vesna T. comes, together with two representatives of the Osijek peace center, who also would like to know what is going on in this city. So we order a new round of coffee and Jura brings some more chairs outside, at that moment the door of the Opcina goes open and about 15 people come outside. I notice that most of the official from UNHCR are also in town. Goran and I look at eachother and walk up to the group in the hope that our contact person from Switzerland is among them, what shows to be not the case. We tell them that we are also interested to talk with them, but they explain that they first would like to go to the "other side" and than will come back to us. Waiting for them to come back, suddenly 4 trucks come around the corner, from Germany and park in front of the UNCIVPOL building, we looked for a while and see how about 35 persons are standing and waiting. So again we walk up to them and tell them what we are doing. They actually came to see the representatives of UNHCR, who just left with the delegation to the "other side", and to show them a little bit from what is going on here we invite them to come to Skorpija and have a beer there and talk with the locals a bit. Normally Skorpija is already full when there are 20 people inside, but this afternoon the place is completely crowded, Jura is very happy, in fact he tells me later every delegation should come and visit the normal places in town and not only the Opcina and the International offices. After the group leaves I stay behind in the pub with some police agents from the town, who try to explain me what happened yesterday and that they were also not so happy with it. The talk goes in at least 4 different languages, one of them speaks a few words French, another some english, another has an uncle in Germany and the rest is my stupid interpretation of the local languages, but all in all in is a nice talk. The Swiss delegation never shows up again. Mir from somewhere in Hrvatska, Wam P.S. I really am a little bit down at the moment because of that money which have been stolen from me, I don't really know how to tell it the project which I had to give it too. ------------------------------------------------------ "Zagreb Diary" can be found on a lot of different electronic networks, it is copyright free and can be ported to any network or other means of communication you like, but please drop my a line, you can reach by sending a message to wam@zamir-zg.comlink.de .
