The first rumours from Beograd are however that Milosevic's party hasn't won as heavy as last time, they even seems to have lost their absolute majority. Also Arkan seems to have lost a lot, strange if you have heard how much money they have put into their campaign. But let's wait until more is known. In the mean time I have asked our friends in Beograd to give their opinion about what Vuk has said in the Sava Center during the last big election meeting of Depos, hope I will get an answer soon. Zagreb is nice in Christmas spirit, you can't get around it anymore. Some of my friends here, really have to get use to it. They lived all their life in a country were Christmas wasn't real existing. According the good socialist tradition their families were not believing in any god, or just maybe in some communist heroes (religion is opium for the people, brother Marx had said (no not one of the film brothers)). But now the new-years tree is suddenly a Christmas tree and there is three official party days more. still I have the feeling that this holy feeling ,the feeling from last years Christmas has deprived a bit. It looks a bit if the holy spirit from the first free, more or less peace-full, open catholic atmosphere has changed a bit into the more let's party and give present atmosphere of the Christmas I always try to escape from in the West. For that matter, or I have being getting use to the rapidly upcoming or better outing of Catholicism in Croatia or it has stopped a bit. New are the posters of the ministry of internal affairs, signed by the MUP, the police, in the town. The call up for a peace-full Christmas and New- Year. On the poster you see a round traffic sign with a red band and on it all kind of weapon systems a man can carry (riffles, grenades, mines and all others). After the experiences of the last two years the police have learned, it seems, don't shot at Christmas evening, don't throw hand grenade's. I like that poster, they should put it up on the whole front-line and on the exit's of military barrack and not restrict it to Christmas and New-Year evening only. In BiH the "white road" convoy is still on it's way. It is declared being a convoy of a NGO, bringing aid to people in Nova Bilu, but seeing the coverage it get's on Croatian television it looks more like a governmental action. Never before I saw a convoy which had so many attention on the Croatia television. Of course it is a big convoy, with over a 100 trucks, but the big Muslim organised convoy some months ago to Tuzla had over 400 trucks and that one came in a lot more difficult situations and didn't got that many time on the Croatian media. Today the convoy ended up in a heavy fire exchange between BiH armija troops and HVO, during that fight one of the Croatian convoy drivers was killed. The report on Croatian television further more said that the BiH armija troops also took 30 empty trucks from the convoy. This fact is however not confirmed by other media's. The airbridge to Sarajevo probably will be closed for a few days, that mostly happens when something happens with one of the aeroplanes. Today a Illjushin-76 had to eat about 8 bullets, probably fired by an automatic riffle, when it made his landing manoeuvres on approaching Sarajevo airport. According the investigation done after the shooting the bullets must have come from an area which is under control of the troop of the Bosnian Serbian General Mladic. As always UNPROFOR filed an official complain, but it will probably have the same effect as all those thousand complains before. Just some days ago a group of Canadian soldiers were harassed by a group of drunken Bosnian Serbian soldiers and I wonder if much have been done with the complain filed after that one. The food situation in Sarajevo is rather at the end at the moment. The official aim which UNHCR has put up to reach was to deliver at least 624 gram of food per person per day, which is mostly something like rice or bread and maybe one conserve box of sardines, but during the month November and still so many flights had to be cancelled (due to the winter weather) and hardly no overland convoy came through that this is now brought back to 240 gram. Our fund-raising campaign around Christmas didn't came from the ground and it looks that it also will be take some extra time to start it, in the time in between we (ARK) are still in "serious" financial "problems". That means the bottom of the bank account has been seen today and for the time being there is no real funding for the general activities, the peace education, the electronic network, the draft resister project and the legal help about human rights. ARKzin and the Pakrac project have still some reserves, but we have to find soon a good idea. The problem is that the war in Croatia is nearly forgotten, the problems in BiH and with the Muslim and Croat refugees from BiH in Croatia are of course more important. And luckily enough a lot of support is coming for solving those problems, not enough, but what is enough in this war. On the other hand still the peace work is also needed.
