A typical balkanic text somebody said to me, this describe the macho culture. Hey Joe, where are you going with that gun in your hand....... "I have been sitting in the sun, only even so many hours we had to stand guard, for the rest it was talking, sitting, waiting, drinking, smoking and waiting." was the answer when I asked a friend who just came back from the big mobilisation. On his table their is laying a packet of "keks" (cookies) wrapped in a camouflage plastic, which you probably will see for miles in the forest, a bit like this "CRO Army" chocolate. "Our train ticket" he say with a smile, "you only have those keks in the army and when they see it in the train you can travel without uniform". I look at the packet and see that on the backside the ingredients are mentioned in english and American standards, so probably you will find it soon in the supermarkets in the states. Hey Joe where you are going with that gun in your hand Maybe the first line of the song would be better, Hey, Joe where are you going with that money in your hand..... Ask what it costs, to let people sitting in the sun for two weeks, doing nothing. They can mostly better paid for that two weeks as in their normal job. And all the time that you are mobilise and that is in principle until the end of the war, you get such a small identity card so you can travel for free in your local transport systems (not that you have to be in active duty the time that you are mobilised, you only can get every moment mobilised for active services). He Joe where you going with that gun in your hand...... That was the big question for all the foreign observers the last two weeks, mobilisation in Croatia and followed by mobilisation in the Krajina region. The upcoming referendum, which took place today in that region. The nerves went up to the cooking point. The answer we know now a bit, he went sitting in the sun. A lot better this time then the last time he told me, than we were at the first lines, and we had to sleep in tents, now we had this holiday house. He Joe, where are you going with that gun in your hand...... It is better to have a regular paid job in the army, than being unemployed. We talked about the fact that uniforms are a lot less popular in Zagreb than a year ago. One of the explanations, beside the obvious one that Zagreb didn't want to have the war to close, is the fact that most of the professional army are former unemployeds, partly of course since their home towns are in UNPA zones, or because their factory is destroyed, but also because of the economical crisis. So they stayed in the army. He Joe, where are you going with that gun in your hand.... To the front-line to defend my homeland, 10% of the 7000 Janjecacans in Zagreb went into the army, that's is higher than the average of the Croatian population. This former inhabitants from Janjevci in Kosovo, from which some came already decades ago (the Croatian exodus from this town in Kosovo to the homeland started in '48), and who made a lot of money with buying and selling cheap clothes and plastic toys, there street is called "wallstreet". But a huge group of them are poor and living in a parts of Dubrova who are called "Korea and Palestine". He Joe where are you going ....... Or rather what are we going to do, Tudjman, Anton Tus (Military advisor of Franjo, former head of the JNA airforce) and other important Croatians had a talk with a delegation of the Serbs in Croatia. Aim of the talks is to improve we situation of those minority groups, especially the Serbs in the country. With whom they talked is unclear, since the Serbian side of the table was always filmed from the back, but it was said that among them where former partisans who are now loyal to the Croatian state. He Vesna where are you going with ARKzin in your hand....... Yesterday evening we had our monthly ARKzin party in the peace centre, every time that a new ARKzin comes out the new movement met somewhere in Zagreb. Always a nice evening to informally meet each other and make plans or just talk a little bit with those you normally don't see so often. ARKzin is now an official registrated newspaper and Vesna has signed a contract with the state owned distribution company so in the near future ARKzin will lay in all the Kiosks. He, Astrid where are you going...... Astrid and Tibor are still in Tuzla, due to the fights in Central Bosnia they can't leave the place. But in a phonecall with NeXus yesterday the told that both have work now in the town. Tibor with his restaurant experiences is doing something in the food distribution and Astrid is nurse in a local ambulanta. For the time being this also means that the office of NeXus in Zagreb is totally under staffed. So Joe and Paula have to worked their heads of. He, Jasmina where are you going with nothing in your hand...... Not to Denmark anymore, that is clear, the Danish have decided last night that refugees from BiH are not longer welcome in Denmark. I hope that that means that the Danish intensify the work in this region with refugees from BiH.
