The reason of today is to remember the start of the anti-fascist resistance in Croatia during the second world war. This day use to be a month later, according the Yugoslav history of the WWII, but the Croats claim that it was today so many years back that they organised took up weapons against the fascists. The last days there was a kind of power struggle in the top of the presidency of BiH. A more Croatia and Croats oriented politician stood up against Izetbegovic, who got also a lot of support from the Croats, he had a long interview the other day on Croatian television explaining his more moderate standpoint. The main point of discussion seems to be the adoption of the new peace plan agreed by the Croats and Serbs, in which the Muslims are getting the Bihac pocket and a part of Central Bosnia, a lot less than in the Vance Owen plan. Futhermore this new three countries should be seperate from each other and not as in the Vance-Owen plan from a kind of federation. Izetbegovic called this new plan a genocide of the state. By the end of yesterday it was however clear that Izetbegovic is still the leader of the presidency and stay in power. Also some meetings between Karadzic and Boban seem to have taken place, but I couldn't really figure out where they were talking about. The day started again a little earlier than normal, normally is around 8 o'clock, what is rather late in a country were people start with their work at 6 o'clock. But Mient Jan Faber, that member of HCA from the Netherlands was still in town and he would like to see me before leaving. Anyway it was a nice talk and he invited me to come the Netherlands in September (during the peace week) as speaker from the Inter Churchial Peace Movement. Together with him I went to the peace centre to have a meeting with the American organisation for Peace and Democracy. One of their leading members had come to Zagreb in a delegation and when Mient Jan and I enter the room she looked a bit surprised. They know each other from HCA meetings. But I said before everybody comes to Zagreb and meet each other here. Mient Jan left and I had an introduction together with Vesna J. about the Anti War Campaign and the whole other stuff, the session from visitors and delegations has started again. After a while Vesna and I were looking at each other very surprised. The American Peace movement wants to hear totally different things than we are use to tell to the European visitors. The wishes are nearly the upper side from each other. The European Peace movement, certain in the beginning of the war, came with the prejudices that Croats were fascists and that they were some way also a lot responsible for the war in their country, since the original comrades and friends of the left wing in Europe, the people from Beograd, could not simply become evil over night. The Americans just talk about Chetnik and naming the aggressor. And of course they advise us that it was from a public relations standpoint much better if we good organise some demonstrations in Zagreb against Tudjman as well. We tried to explain them that we in Zagreb choose another way. But after the talk we looked again at each other and thought that it was a good lesson for us, since more USAmerican organisation will come and we know now a bit about their discussion and how they interpretate this war. After that it was rushing of to the ICVA-UNHCR NGO steering group, where I couldn't refuse to ask the security officer to explain me who to get Tibor and Astrid out of Tuzla, since we desperately need them in the office of NeXus. His advice is that they go to Zenica, from their to Kiseljak and then to Sarajevo to take a plane out. But the Danish told me that if we could organise some official UNHCR papers they were willing to take one of us on their convoy on Saturday via Banja Luka to Tuzla and get them out on the way back. So if I get the official papers for them I will be on my way to Tuzla on Saturday. The next meeting was with Suncokret about the rebuilding project in Ravno, just updating everybody and getting some information myself about what is going on. The last week Suncokret rapidly have to adopt the new situations in the camps they are working. In the camp in Posusje in Hercegovina, were Suncokret started in December with work with the 450 Muslim refugees in the school their, together with Italian groups who were cooking for the refugees, the situation now has totally change during the weekend. First the 190 Muslims which were still in Posusje have left for Split, accompanied by Suncokret volunteers and from their they will go to Ancona in Italy to stay the rest of the war at the other side of the Adriatic. The same day however 480 Croatian refugees from central Bosnia arrived in the school and the Italians decided the leave with the Muslims, but they left their cooking gear behind. So suddenly Suncokret has a full house in Posusje again, and had to change from working with children and women into again cooking for all of them (they are lucky that our old cook (James) from the Sunhouse in Grebenscica return and is now in Posusje, he probebly never in his live cooked for so many people) and helping the local red cross with every thing they can. During Monday more refugees arrived in the school and on the school yard they had to build up tents for them.
