I started the day with a visit to the Dutch Embassy or consulate, I still do not know yet what it is, heard that we had an ambassador here now, but on the door and post paper it still says consulate. When I went in one of the rooms and the lady looked up to me with some question marks in here eyes, she hadn't said "enter" yet after I knocked. I asked in Dutch if she spoke the language, but unfortunately she didn't, only English and Croatian. I explained here that two people of Suncokret are in Tuzla and that they can't get out. Before I finished my line she reacted that the Dutch embassy couldn't do much for them. But as soon as I said that the two were Dutch she changed her opinion and brought me to the first secretary. I sat down with him in his room and after explaining him that I needed a letter from the Embassy stating that they agree with our request towards UNHCR to allow Tibor and Astrid returning on the UNHCR convoy to Tuzla this weekend he reacted that this was a totally new request for him, but it wouldn't be a big problem to write such a letter. He asked how I could survive so long in this area, he was here now for five months and really couldn't follow it any more. One of the first questions was if it really is true that there are about 200.000 Muslim refugee at the coast which are going to be transported to other places. I told him that 200.000 is a little high number according to my information's, but that a big movement of refugees is going on indeed, but that 20.000 or so would be more like it. And I explained him a bit about how the organisation of the refugee work in Croatia is organised. In Zagreb you have this governmental office for refugees and displaced people, which is the central co-ordination. The status of the office is simular with a ministry. The practical co-ordination is done by the offices for social work on regional and local level. And that besides the UNHCR refugee camp in Karlovac and the Danish Red Cross camp in Kutina in principle all the camps and centres are run by the Croatian government, at least the official camps. To unofficial camps, from which hardly nobody knows the real number are mostly run by organisation from Arabic countries. I was more or less surprised to found out that this was all new for him, I more or less thought that at this level most of the people are well informed, but it seems to be not the case. After a while I told him that I would come back the next morning to pick up the letter, which made him reacting that it would be a mad house in the morning and that of course trickered my reaction, saying that I don't know any office in Zagreb were it isn't a madhouse normally. For there I went to UNCHR to pick up the application papers for the bleu cards and went to ARK to start working on the weekly diary for Danas which has to be ready today. But before I really got to it Jan Haverkamp from Milieu Kontakt (Environmental contact), a Dutch organisation which support environmental groups in Eastern Europe, visit me there. I hadn't seen Jan for more than a year, but he helped me last year when I arrived in Zagreb a lot by sending the first to modems after my portable modems were blow up by the some electric shocks via the telephone lines. He just returned from Rumania and was rather surprised by the peace full atmosphere in Zagreb, although he knew more or less what to expect as daily reader of the diary. Nicely sitting in the sun and talking about all those things what has happened with me and him in the last year and our friends in the different Eastern European countries we could have go on for hours, but as said on such moments everything comes together. Vanja came down to tell me that they need me up stairs in the peace centre since some group from Italy arrived and they would love to here more about Email and Suncokret. And I also had to work on that diary from Danas. So Jan took up the job to edit my diary and I went up. I dropped into a discussion about the Italian plan to organise this peace camps in Sarajevo in the coming months and explained them clearly that according to my information it is impossible to reach Sarajevo over land at the moment. Even UNHCR is not coming much further than Jablanica. Vesna stated again that according to our information the International Peace centre, which is still working in Sarajevo, is not at all happy with this action. And that we don't see that the expected 3500 participants get flown into Sarajevo by UNHCR. And if this would happen we would like to find out if the Italians realised how much space they take in those planes, space which rather could be used for food and medicines. I couldn't resist to give my criticism about the fact that aid organisation are taking sides in this war. I am glad that Suncokret stayed in Posusje when the Muslims left for Italy and that they helped the local red cross preparing the coming of the 500 Croat refugees. Maybe we have shown this way that the assuming that Suncokret only wants to work with Muslims is not true. Refugees need help and it really doesn't matter for us which nationality they have.
