The first phonecall I received was from an ex volunteer from Suncokret who worked in a refugee centre in Pula in the last weeks. She heard there a story from a young Muslim soldier who got some grenade shells in his leg, but couldn't get operated in Croatia, since according to his story this operation was considered as too expensive by Croatian Docters. She told me that she maybe found Docters in Germany who would like to do this operation and ask me to find out about the guy and his medical record. Just a few minutes later a truck from the Netherlands arrived with some tons of food. And in no time the half of the office was standing full with boxes. For the rest I spend some time finding out about the possibility to registrate NeXus as foreign relief organisation in Croatia, since we still don't have this official recognition we can't get the medicines out of the airport, which are waiting their to be shipped to Tuzla already for nearly a month now. But it seems that we first have to produce some official papers with stamps from the Netherlands, since without stamps it wouldn't work. It was good to be back in an office for a while, to see what is going on and to see the result of all that work. Paula informed me about all the different projects NeXus is undertaking at the moment and it gives you a real warm feeling to see how all over the world people in small local groups are active to help the people in these countries. Vesna received a nice fax today from the "skupstina opcine Osijek", the town council office of Osijek, the chairman of the Zupanije of Osijek and Baranja himself, Mr. Branimir (the name means "defender of peace" by the way) Glavas himself. He seem to be a regular reader of ARKzin, since he found a small mistake in the last number. One of Vesna journalist wrote in a long story called "Croatia is ill of paranoia" a line that Glavas would have said that every worker of the town, which would take a free day at the 22th (the day Croatia remembered the start of the anti fascist action during the second world war) of this month would be sacked. Glavas reacted that he didn't said that, but that he announced in Vjesnik on the 20th that the Monday before the 22th was not a holiday. The second part of short letter was actually more interesting, since Glavas also took the opportunity to explain Vesna that her journalist is a "laying Serbo communist bastard (lazgiva srbokomunistacka fukara)" and that he would like if she would publish that statement in her newspaper. Not only am I sure that Vesna will publish the whole fax, but I am also sure that she will put Glavas name on the list of writers of the next ARKzin. Of course it was wrong to publish a wrong statement or a statement which can't be proofed, but the line was not so important in the article as a whole. On the other side it is nice to see how well read ARKzin is and than you have to know that some people still think that ARKzin and ARK are marginal groups. In the evening I met a totally drunken pilot of the national air company. The guy sat down at my table when he heard that I was talking english with somebody and asked me if I like the country. And what can I say, I love being in Croatia and BiH. But he went on saying that all the people have become totally crazy, that he didn't recognize the feeling anymore. This is the Balkan, here feelings are real, if you love and fuck somebody you do it right, if they, the Balkans, make war and kill eachother they also do it for real. I don't give a fuck for Europe, I don't give a fuck for Croatia, I love the country, I am an European. But look everything is broken, we are the same as the Serbs, I love living in Beograd, he continue, my both children has been born there and see now. They live in Zagreb, but they are Serbs, it stands in their passports, born in Beograd, born in the town of the enemy, but they are not my enemies, I love Serbs, we speak the same language. We are all mad in Croatia, our leaders are idiots and they totally broke the country. See what they have done, we were rich, I made a few thousand dollars a month flying for a Serbian company and now, not more than a thousand a month (what is still a lot of money in this country). And Europe they look at me if I am an idiot as well, I was flying in Germany in the past and to the USSR, we were rich, we were the California for the East Block and now I am nothing anymore. You know Europe and USAmerica could have stopped it just like that if they wanted, look what Clinton has down yesterday, flash 22 rockets on Baghdad, no the CIA wanted this war, fuck them. We are Europe, Brussels is nothing, this is the best place in the world, I love my country, I love Croatia, we have the best coast in the world. I am born in Rijeka you know, just a few hours away from Italy, that was life and look now. But believe me in ten years we will be friends again with the Serbs, believe me, we are the same people, we speak the same language, we love and hate the same, this is the Balkan. Bok I Mir from Zagreb, Wam P.S. when I ran story through the spelling checker I noticed that it didn't know the word fuck. ------------------------------------------------------ Zagreb Diary can be found on a lot of different electronic networks, it is copyright free and can be ported to any network or other means of communication you like, but please drop my a line, you can reach by sending a message to wam@zamir-zg.comlink.de or wam@zamir-zg.comlink.apc.org.
