Zagreb Diary 6 May, 1993

Dobar Dan,

After waiting a whole day, night and half the morning finally still no answer, 
only that the Muslim defence line at Zepa is broken by the soldeirs fighting for 
the same Pale government which couldn't make the decision about the 
Vance-Owen peace plan. "We will have referendum about (last year when the 
war started nobody was asked, certainly not by referendum) about the peace 
plan". That was an answer probably everybody had overlooked, no yes, no no, 
we have to wait again.

This reaction is written down before I had the possibility to listen to the 
international reactions, they are just my own. I think that the first step now is 
that with the referendum coming up within 10 days the fighting must be 
stopped at the point it is now, there should be an absolute cease fire from all 
sides otherwise it looks so meaningless this whole try to make it more 
democratic is than just a matter of waiting again.

Waiting for the bombers, which are already brought into strike alarms. the 
rumours went around that American troops are spotted in BiH, up to now 
nobody from the Pentagon denied. I must say that for the first time I want to 
listen as soon as possible to what Clinton will react, but that will happen when 
we are already on our way to the next day.

What a dilemma, what a period we have ahead of us. It influence my 
thoughts, but don't interrupt much of the life in Zagreb I have noticed, most 
people weren't even busy at all with what happened at Pale and how to 
continue our thoughts for the near future, what will happen and what kind of 
fire stands ahead of us. It is just if BiH is far far away. The day after tomorrow 
Astrid, Eloi and Joseph will go with the truck to Tuzla. Tuzla was shelled this 
week for the first time in many weeks, will they end up in the middle of the full 
scale war.

Messages which accompanied the discussion in Pale were not so hopeful if 
you believe in peace, so of the delegate showed that they are not impressed 
by the American activities, they are not unbeatable, they say. 

What was really new for me to admit was the picture from Milosovic and 
Cosic (the "so-called writer" whom Sesjel was pointing at in his speech some 
days ago?). To me they honestly look like to persons who really want to have 
peace now, "Yugoslavia is tired off" was the messages. And that suddenly 
after days and month in which the imago on the television of the two was if 
they were untrustable criminals... I wrote already some days ago that the 
Peace Movement has a new star in their middle, it seems. 

Who is for sure a hero in this war, is General Marillon, Srebrenica is now a 
"safe heaven" and he returned to make appointments with the local authorities 
to insure the water situation in the town. His entry was like to allied troops in 
the Netherlands 43 years ago. If he represent the new look of UNPROFOR, 
from which this new Danish Commander told, who taken over the job from ... 
(I forget his name at the moment), than he did a good job. UNPROFOR 
should come closer with the people on the ground.

Wonder what will happen if UNPROFOR start to operated from the air, what 
that have for effect of those on the ground, civilians and UNPROFOR 
members alike.

Talking about air, you can now hop by aeroplane through the air from Zagreb 
to Brac, Tudjman did the first hop today and opened the new airstrip. The 
ceremony as impressive as always with political speeches, checking the 
guards (HV) and the blessing by the local Church highest. After that he went 
to Hvar and now it is waiting till the tourists start to arrive. Knowing the big 
tour operators they will not even fly over Zagreb, but jump directly to Brac. 
Besides from some refugees the people never ever will experience that there 
is a war still going on, some hundreds of kilometres away from them.

In the main time I have been watching the television station from Banja Luka, 
till my big surprise I can receive it on Brace Domany without special 
equipment (my roommate talked via HAMradio with his friends back in 
Columbia this week through an old JNA tank antenna which is connected on 
our balcony), just the normal television reciever outside the window. A pity 
that I was alone and that nobody could translate the speeches on their news. 
Which was basically everything what I could see before the station disappear 
again from the television, next time that I could find it, there was still news, or 
again news.

I just have heard the speech of Clinton, the day before the last big war started 
in the Netherlands (8 May, 1940), the prime minister said on the radio that the 
people should go to bed in all quietness and that nothing will happen soon. 
That was not particular the message which I received listen to Clinton, to be 
honest I am just waiting for the message on television that it has started. 

By the way we are watching "The First Circle" on HTV the last days, and it is 
going a lot better with Vesna, she has to take anti biotics for another 10 days 
and stay in bed, but we seem to have done the right things in the last weeks, 
let's hope she get better soon, her mother took over the nursery today, so I am 
a little bit more free to work.....
