Anyway Zagreb is everything except quiet, there is war again in the air, not that you see it on the streets, no everything is nicely in order now, Vlaska and Maksimir are nicely repaired for 9 1/2 million DEM and will be opened tomorrow. In a couple of days the Zagreb Fair will be opened and the town becomes more and more a capital, just behind Vesna's house the Chinishe people republic embassy will be opened soon. But on the other hand, the period that the security officers of UNPROFOR can say during a briefing that there is now real news from the Croatian fronts and that it is indeed a little dull is over. Never the less I like to write first in my diary today what we have heard from Banja Luka, it is not 100% clear, but the Croatian television had a long, long report on it today. It seems that the 16th brigade of the Bosnian Serbian army has taken over the city. On the television you saw all kind of tank manoeuvres in the streets and tanks and armoured cars blocking the cross roads. The commander tells that they took over the city, with the support of the local population to make an end of the activities of those who are profiting from the war. They took control over the police and the citizens have to be back in their houses by this night 10 o'clock. Karadzic send them a messages that he in principle supports the aims of the rebellion, but that they shouldn't let them be dragged too far by foreign propaganda. It is unclear which propaganda he is referring to, since the 16th brigade is know as followers of Sjessel and even some of Arkan, both being Serbs from Serbian could be seen as foreigners by the government of Bosnian Serbian Republic. On the other hand it could also be the western world, who knows. What kind of effect this has on the war is not really clear, it look that is was getting calmer and now...... The same reaction I had after the news that the regional authorities of the Bihac pocket, up to now always considered as part of the Sarajevo (read Muslim) controlled pieces of BiH has split itself away from the authorities in Sarajevo. They want to ride their on course and stated that they are much more depending on Zagreb and Croatia than other parts of the Sarajevo controlled area's. So we have now at least 4 different governments in BiH, it is getting more and more separated, you never know how this rebellion in Banja Luka will work out, maybe we will have a split between those fronts as well soon. In this area everything can happen. But back to Croatia, many places were under fire today, not only Karlovac and Zadar, but also heavy shelling was reported from the Gospic area and even a place which has been safe for over a year now, like Sisak was under alarm today. This all came more or less falling at of a bleu sky, (as we say in Dutch), like the grenades. Watching the television means again that every now and than in top of the screen appears a message that one town or another is under first or general alarm. And for the first time in months I am sitting with a map on my lap and look up the villages and towns which are under alarm. It is all around the North and South Sector of UNPROFOR. What are the Canadian and the French doing at this moment goes through my head. Also some good news today, at least on the Afternoon report was a long item of the "Serious Roadtrip", one of the many relief organisations which has found a place on the road down from Split in the direction of Omnis. Just outside Split nearly any holiday house seems to be rented by one or another group from outside running their operation into BiH from there. The "Serious Roadtrip" is a bunch of clowns, like Joseph's truck all their truck's are painted in the most colourful way and they are visiting the refugee camps around the country with their clown acts. Besides that they also run convoys into BiH and organise that children in refugee camps can go on some thing like holidays trips, even when it is sometimes into the relaxing place along the beach of Omnis of the British forces. It is one of those fantastic colours in the rainbow of relief groups active in this area. When I was talking about it with Vesna we found out that the last months it are more and more the British, Italians and Americans, who are helping. Or at least it are their actions or organisations which hit the news. Another important and joyful thing happens not so far away from here, one of the most unexpected things in this century, but in the last 5 years nothing seems to be impossible, we have learned to live with the most radical changings over night. Still the fact that the state of Israel and the PLO have recognised eachother was something which I didn't expected to happen in the coming years, but again I never would have expected the war in this region either.
