I did my political training for the new group of volunteers for Pakrac this morning, explaining them why the state Croatia has the form of a banana (a banana republic in Europe), around 500 years ago the Ottomans (Turks) pushed the Croats, who occupied a big part of what is now BiH (nearly up to the river Drina, the border line between BiH and Serbia) into what is now Croatia, and so on and so on. It is always funny to see the faces of the people when you start explaining this. For the first time they seem to realise that all they thought is for a big part not really wrong, but surely not put into the historical contest. Anyway that is another story. Today Izetbegovic gave a press conference in Sarajevo, after SDA (Party for Democratic Action, the more or less Muslim national party) had their meeting. Izetbegovic was strong in his reply on Tudjman peace proposal, it seems to be highly unacceptable for him. And I can imagine that the clause in which it is stated tat the self-proclaimed Bosnian Croats state Herceg-Bosna is free to join the state of Croatia if they want and further more that the Lasva valley in central Bosnia is an integrated part of Herceg-Bosna. In the proposal it was said that a cease-fire could be reached for that area by the 15th of this month. If you look at the reality of this moment it is hard to imagine. The fights there are going on and heavy street fighting, from house to house are reported between HVO and BiHArmija troops. Also Izetbegovic said that there will be no peace as long as former (before the war started) Muslim dominated area's like f.e. Zvornik, Prijedor and Visegrad at the borderline with Serbia will not be under Muslim control. He claimed that the BiHArmija has now around 200.000 soldiers and is ready to fight until they have regained control over all what use to be "theirs". Literally he said that they are not willing to talk about peace as long as those cities are not under BiHArmija control. The airlift to Sarajevo, which was suspended last week when again shells were falling on the airport has been resumed two days ago until in the end of the afternoon, half way the planned daily flights another shell landed on the runway. Sources from UNPROFOR and other claim that this shell didn't came from Bosnian Serbs held positions, but from the Bosnian Muslim held parts of the town. As well as most of the shelling and shooting in the first days of this week seems to have come from the BiHArmija position and although the Bosnian Serbs reacted a spokesman from the UN said that the biggest fire power didn't came from them. Yesterday morning the airlift was resumed and according to the messages about 20 flights came in. We have the saying in Dutch that you can't see the forest due to the trees and that feeling I had when I read the last days all those statements from different people about the possibility to use air-strikes in BiH. It seems that NATO has decided that they are willing to bring their bombers in if UNPROFOR and the other UN bodies on the ground in BiH are asking for it. At the same moment they said that NATO and others should stop to threat with airstrikes all the time as long as they don't do anything, it makes the credibility of NATO rather low, said Clinton. The main reason to use airstrikes, and it seems that nothing will happen before next month, is to open the airport in Tuzla and the get to Canadian out of Srebrenica and the Danish UNPROFOR into that place. A problem was seen when using airpower in Srebrenica, which lays between 20 and 30 Km from the Serbian border and those supersonic bombers could easily miss the turn and end up in the airspace above Serbia, where they could be under attack from Serbian anti-aircraft guns. Karadzic, the political leader of the Bosnian Serbs, said that he was totally against the opening of Tuzla airport at this moment, after there is a workable peace agreement all airports can be opened, he said, but at this moment in time opening Tuzla airport would only prolong the war in his opinion. The Muslim forces (BiHArmija) than get's new supplies and will continue fighting. The questions about free movement of humanitarian aid he forwarded towards his staff of generals, stating that they make the decisions on that level. Last but not least, after a week of clips on Croatian television about a political programme which is broadcasted every week on Tuesday in which they more or less said all the time that they are going to reveal this week who is financing Feral Tribune and ARKzin (seen as newspapers of the "5th colone", Seks, prime-minister, said even that Croatia should not tolerate that a magazine as Feral Tribune is published in their country), and Vesna being very nervous about it (especially after Viktor was mobilised and the financial police controlled dropped in at Feral's place in Split), the programme turned out to be rather harmless, it was about Soros and why the guy is putting so much money into Eastern Europe. Soros ones asked why he did it answer that some people have a hobby to buy football team, his hobby is to invest in democracy. Another typical Soros answer came on a question ones asks if he was financed by the CIA, he answered that it was more they other way round. Soros visit, by the way, Croatia last autumn, and nearly decided to stop his operations here, but after having a talk with Tudjman, during which Tudjman explained him more or less that he, Soros, was giving the money to the wrong people (neo-Yugoslavs and people who stayed so long outside the country that they don't know what is happening) and that he better could give it directly to those which got the support of the nation (in so many words HDZ), Soros decided that his support towards to free media and other civil (NGO) project is harder needed than ever. Although people from Soros Croatia corrected him all the time Soros refused to call Tudjman President Dr. Tudjman, he kept on referring to him as General Tudjman.
