"What are you thinking, how are the local working brigades reacting ?", were my return questions. "They normally are going to work and also we would like to go". The rest of the day I didn't got any phonecalls anymore, so I think nothing has happened. Every day I hear more about Viktor Ivancic, the mobilised main editor of Feral Tribune. Always when something happens to a person or a place I learn more about their history, a kind of exemplary study. Viktor is one of those people, who has been described by a columnist of one of the state newspapers (in that case the writer revered to somebody else but that doesn't matter), as somebody without the right papers. Although Viktor already came to Croatia in the early seventies as young child, he never really became a Croatian citizen. When he applied for his "Domovnica" (a paper proofing that you have Croatian citizenship, introduced in the last two years) he never got an answer. He is not the only one, and who is born in BiH, but lives already for some years in Croatia, who is suddenly call up for their army service. After the committee for Human Right, formerly connected to SDU (Social Democrat Union, which is one of the left-wing opposition parties and has it burn grounds in the former "reformistic party" of Markovic, the last prime-minister of Yugoslavia), had published a press release about this sudden mobilisation wave of people born in BiH, more and more articles about it hit the Croatian, but especially the foreign newspapers and media. Those people are en-listed to go as "volunteers" to BiH, rumours in Croatia and statements from the BiH government says that already a few thousands of this "volunteers" are fighting in Central Bosnia. Viktor announced that he is not going to fight, he is now in a 20 days training, but said that he will refuse to carry a weapon afterwards. In some newspapers it was mentioned that Viktor, in his JNA (Yugoslav Peoples Army) year was a good radio operator and that they hope that he will fulfil the same quality work for the Croatian Army. It also seems that since he is in the army barracks he recieved at last his "Domovnica". Owen is requested by the representative of the BiH government to free himself from all his responsibilities concerning the Peace conference. They asked him, with other words, to go. The French and USAmerican have changed places in the opinion about military intervention via the air it seems (although in this case it only concerned securing Tuzla airport). Up to now it was always the USA who try to start the discussion about bombing the Serbs out of the hills, which mostly ended in some extra tension and than a big relieve or disappointment when it again did happened (during the first and second threat of using the airforce, the journalist went of from Zagreb to Ancona to be on the first planes, but it already happened so often that they just wait now). Every time every administration got a lot of criticism from (western) Europe. Yesterday, however the French asked for the airforce, but now the Amies dicided that they wouldn't send their planes. In the morning some representatives from HCA (Helsinki Citizens Assembly, a huge network, started after the revolutions in central Europe, of NGO's of all kind (labour unions, peace-, human rights-, environment- groups, etc.)) passed by to talk about that office they like to open in Sarajevo. Their first aim will be to co-ordinated Grassroot relief work and humanitarian aid distribution in the town, together with the local NGO's. But more important is the raising of the international awareness also for the need of the undepended media in BiH. Besides newspapers as Oslobodjenje there are some more who still are been published in Sarajevo, as well as some regional independed radio's stations, which are still broadcasting (for one of them, radio Zid (wall), already for more than two months a load of equipment stands on Zagreb Airport, but can't get pass the Bosnian Serbian liaison officer, or something like that). My door arrived ! After a travel for almost 4 months finally the door, which was made for me by an artists from Sarajevo, who lived in a refugee camp in Croatia and now in exile in Switzerland arrived. It stands now, wrapped in plastic, as a symbol of the (former) unity of all religions in Sarajevo in the heart of the room, leaning against the wood stove, which we don't use anymore since we have an electric one. The door will be brought to the Netherlands to open an other gate, we want to sell it to secure ARKzin for another month. A big part of the day yesterday we spend discussing the financial future from ARK and the Pakrac project. Although all the projects seems to go without huge problem, we are more or less broke (for the Pakrac project we hope to get funding soon, but are bankaccounts are nearly showing all zero's with nothing in front of it). One of the reason is the decreasing interest for the ongoing war, as well as the resources of those organisations or individuals abroad supporting (peace) initiatives around here are drying up, people can give only so much, you know. It is also the time that most groups have to look for new space for the summer, since we are sure that we will make it some how in the coming months. And after the last half year ARK is boosting out of it center again. More groups than ever are active in the small building. So the famous search will start again soon. Mir from somewhere in Hrvatska, Wam P.S. I heard yesterday that the house of one of the women of the peace group in Samobor (organising the first international women seminar "Hearts for Peace) has been burned down to the ground. It is not yet known what happened, but she continues with the preparation of the seminar (the house is not that important as the peace). ------------------------------------------------------ "Zagreb Diary" can be found on a lot of different electronic networks, it is copyright free and can be ported to any network or other means of communication you like, but please drop my a line, you can reach by sending a message to wam@zamir-zg.comlink.de .
