You see the picture from old Russian made tanks, probably copied in Yugoslavia some 15 years ago or so, trying to drive through the snow, but most of them have already problems to start. The piles of empty shell are covered with a nice fresh layer of snow. The cease-fire in Sarajevo, which held the World record up to now of 2 weeks, has been violated yesterday, when a mortar and heavy artillery attack took place on the centre of the town. Especially in the neighbourhood of the famous Holiday Inn Hotel (on 3 April '92 the first people in BiH were killed there during a peace rally, not real true that from the first people in BiH, in Sept. '91 already the villages of and around Ravno were razed and destroyed by JNA and Chetnik divisions coming back from Dubrovnik, by the way). Also in Mostar the cease-fire was violated. The UNPROFOR commander of BiH, General Rose, have said that he need more UNPROFOR troops, at least 4500, in Sarajevo to secure UNPROFOR task. At the same moment UK peace monitors in Sarajevo announced that the had proof about the rumour that the Bosnian Serbian Army is building up special units, which task it is to attack the UNPROFOR peace keepers, who are guarding the heavy weapons, which were handed over to them by the Bosnian Serbian Army. This attack will take place NATO will start air-strikes on Bosnian Serbian Army positions. On the back page of Feral Tribune this week stood Jalta, Jalta and a picture of three monkeys and yes it is nearly 50 years ago that the big three decided that both sides of the not yet started cold war should both have 50% of Yugoslavia, not of the territory, but of the political influence. And at the moment we see it happening, the USSR called Russia now, still about 75% of the former USSR (which were also mostly called Russians anyway), I think and the USA (which hasn't change much in their politics, it seems, but without the UK which is not anymore the big one of Western Europe. Now the separations is made on territory, everybody have seen how ex-Yu is slowly sliding apart in two main directions (as jig-saw puzzle with a very strange border-line). The big question how this nice words in Jalta about political influence will be translated in territory, here in Croatia some people hope that the Drina will be the border line of the two different "political" systems. And when you look at the map of Croatia, between the two world wars, you see a lot of similarities with the territory which some Croats now claim is theirs, beside Croatia (inclusive of course the UNPA area's), the map also shows Hercegovina and Central Bosnia as part of the Croatian state (a little bit smaller as NDH, but still going up as far as Travnik and Forjnica, also including most of the Zenica-Visoko area). If you count to it the area's which are under control of BiHarmija, plus the regions they say that they are rightfully there's (and I am not talking about the claim that everything within the International recognised border of BiH is claimed by some people to be under BiH (Sarajevo) control, but towns as Zvornik and that area. After you draw all the lines on the map you see that maybe at least a part will be up to the Drina. But I have said a lot of time, the real discussion is not about border line and political influence, that's just a discussion since we are in the depths of war. The question is how can all this people live together again. And when UNPROFOR beside the ones for Sarajevo needs another 6.500 troops for the rest of BiH peace is a long way to go. For two years there are UNPA's in Croatia and now slowly, at least in sector West a kind of normalisation is taken place, but only the first steps. Economy rebuilding will be the big word in the future, Dr. Tudjman announced yesterday that the possible boycott towards Croatia is now gone, instead of being boycotted Croatia will be able to get funds from the International community. On such moment the words from a town official in Pakrac come to my mind, the economical reconstruction on both sides of the front-line should be at a simular level, otherwise we get a rich and a poor part and the old wounds of this war will be enough to push up the tentions again. The other side of the front-line means here in Croatia basically area's controlled by Serbs, and those people are under a heavy economical boycott of the world. Not much possibilities for them to rebuild any economy under this conditions. In the same speech he hold yesterday evening on the Croatian Television, broad casted life of course, he also told that the agreement was a major breakthrough in the way that the world super powers treated the complex issues of the crisis in former Yugoslavia. He said that Croats, Muslims and the world will benefit from this Agreement and that the future of the Croats in BiH is ensured by it. Dr. Tudjman (or general Tudjman as Soros use to call him) also announced that the Croatia government don't want to prolong the UNPROFOR mandate in Croatia if the conditions don't change. He said that the UNPROFOR supervision was insufficient in the last two years, one of the arguments he used was the fact that the 4 aeroplanes which were shot down came from Udbina, which lays in UNPA South. Mir from somewhere in Hrvatska, Wam P.S. the BiH representative to UN has of course another name as Mr. Salajdzic, since that is the vice-president of BiH. ------------------------------------------------------ "Zagreb Diary" can be found on a lot of different electronic networks, it is copyright free and can be ported to any network or other means of communication you like, but please drop my a line, you can reach by sending a message to wam@zamir-zg.comlink.de .
