Zagreb Diary, 7 November, 1994

Dobar Dan,

The west bank in the hands of the 5th corps of BiHarmija and the 
East bank in the hands of Bosnian Serbian army, fighting heavily 
not the loose the town. That is different from f.e. Kupres where 
most of the fighting went to other way around. In this case the BiH 
troops came from north-west, rather than south-east. It happens 
app. 100 Kilometre north from Kupres, a little south on the border 
line between the BiH government controlled Bihac pocket and the 
North-west part of Bosnian Serb held BiH. On the borders of the 
river Una, from where UN observers report that in Bosanska 
Krupa the fighting is heavy and it looks that Bosnian Serb forces 
are re-grouping itself and getting support, but nothing sure yet.

The BiH 5th corps took in the last week 250 Km2 from the 
Bosnian Serbs and after the fights they had earlier this year with 
the defenders from the independent Bihac pocket and taking it 
back under control of the BiH government in Sarajevo. A corps 
what is likely to make itself a name. Mostly you hear something 
vague as HVO or BSA troops or so, but next time I see a BiH 
soldier in Zagreb I will see. I wonder what kind of symbol and 
nickname the have found for themselves. Yes it seems that the 
fighting really has started. It is months ago that there was such a 
battle at the front-line. For months the fronts seem to be stable. 
No real movements up and down the line. 

There is always a kind of trilling going through my body if I log in on 
line to our ZaMir-Zg hosts and see that on the other line a netcall 
is busy with ZaMir-Sa, they have again down there electricity and 
telephone working at the same time at the same spot and our 
system has made it trough through the obvious hundred of 
phonecalls which are taken place or people want to have taken 
place. You look as it where at those brave bits and bytes who are 
without their knowing on their way to Sarajevo, passing check 
point and war zones, without UNPROFOR protections and god 
know where they may end. Under what conditions those users 
from ZaMir-Sa have to run their netcall I only can imagine. 
Somewhere from the basis of a total destroyed house, or from a 
room where you only have to look up to see the blue sky. 

Since a few months this connection is up and running, Eric just 
installed the next ZTN (Za Mir TransNational Network) hosts in 
Kosova. The new system is a bit a stranger in the ZTN family, up 
to now all system called Za Mir (For Peace), but this system calls 
Zana, which is the name of an old Illiric good goddess in the 
forest. In Kosova most people al from Albanian ethnically 
background, according to the figure from a few years ago, at least 
90%, and in Albanian For Peace is something completely different 
than the Slavic ZaMir. More over the word would be longer than 
the 8 characters which DOS allows us to use. Things are not 
really quiet down there either, at least now we hear the direct 
reactions from people there and if you read the output from the 
Kosova information in London. We don't call it war, but if you read 
the stories the situation is not far away from it. It is hard to figure 
out what is really happening down there glad that we can be in 
contact now with groups there.

And so it happens that Email from Beograd and Prishtina end up 
in Sarajevo, even some times causing a traffic jam on our system 
in Zagreb. But it is as some researcher asked me some days 
ago, true, Email can come from where you normally don't hear 
about and surely not to hear directly from that place. 

From other people around the world I am noticing that the winter is 
fastly coming already, some people on the same level as we in 
the states already have had snow last weekend. In Zagreb it is 
rainy and wet, but soon the snow can come to this region, starting 
again the in the mountains in the middle of Bosna. Like last year in 
November. But also we have to think about how to get our 
projects through the long winter days. Since besides that it is cold 
it is also the time that not much money is coming in to keep f.e. 
Pakrac, but also ZaMir running. We have in Pakrac about enough 
till the end of the year, but after that we have to thing again. Fund-
raising is a job I hate but it has to be done, as said for destruction 
there seems to be unlimited sources, the story from f.e. that house 
in Gornji Vakuf, the soldier who has destroyed has used more 
bullets than what the new building of at least 10 of the same 
houses would cost. He shot with an automatic riffle a house in 
pebbles. Must have been busy for some days to do it.

The last line of the diary today are from Ivo, a guy from Zagreb 
who lives now in New York (sorry people on APC):

"In Croatia, the whole our youth Communist Party scared us in 
schools and in media with Chetnicks and Ustashas. They wanted 
us to hate them. Whole our youth it's visionary leaders choked us 
with their holly war against all kinds of supposed nationalism. We 
hated them leaders, too. They'd throw us in prison for three years 
just for singing the "wrong" song. Then, suddenly, all of them 
disappear into Ustashas and Chetnicks, sunking into their very 
enemies. Now we have Ustashas in the cities and Chetnicks in 
the country, and most of them are former Communist Party 
officials. Isn't that scary?"

And the big question now is not what is the right song, but which 
lyrics should you sing with which melody at which place. I heard 
the most "wonderful" Ustasha songs, which I recognised from the 
melody as former Partisan songs, but also a few weeks later I got 
the Chetnik version and in between the more moderate Croatian 
or Serbian version. So ....
