Yesterday evening late Vesna came home. She was still proud of the meeting she had in the morning on Soros. All the main editors of all the newspapers in Croatia sponsored by Soros for the first time met up with the media board of Soros in this country. She wasn't really looking forwards to that meeting at first. But during the meeting she found out that also in Croatia among the free media at least ARKzin is not considered as a small one. It takes still the second place in sold copies after Feral Tribune and the other tries of creating a new independent week or monthly newspaper in Croatia are still having serious problems. And it is also the cheapest newspaper to produce. So although some cuts had to made, due to miss planning or so, in the promised grants till the end of the year, ARKzin came out with the full budged, all numbers till the end of the year are at least paid for the printing. Vesna also met Victor from Feral for the first time. Up to now they only met each other by phone and often each others newspapers were mentioned. Vesna had the honour to be the only woman among the still male dominated world. But some how around Antiratna Kampagne (ARK) things are changing a bit. In most new organisations coming out of Antiratna Kampagne (ARK) women are playing an important most leading role, blossoming of the women organisations of course are extra strong examples of it. Even we found out the amount of women using our computer network is much higher here then anywhere else. Surprising how many of our accounts belong to women or their organisations and how the electronic witches (Cecilia and Kathryn, now Kathryn alone) have teaches women how to use the net and how to use it. Our witch is now in Beograd so I expect a lot of women and groups from there joining our virtual community. Anyway the life on our /ZaMir network gets more and more interesting, more or more newspapers and groups are publishing their information and it is real great to be able to read material from all the regions, no the conferences link with Sarajevo over Switzerland is working again also our friends from there are active back on the net. From Pakrac I got the messages that if I wanted to come for my birthday there it would be better to contact them before, since they are still unsure about possible evacuation. They are ask to be prepared. They have got via UNCIVPOL news from the volunteers under the "other side" who returned from Hungary that every thing is still calm down there and no problems are mentioned. Again such a unclear situation during which you can't much do else than wait and hope that not suddenly totally surprising things are happening. The evacuation discussion pops up nearly every 3 months, and you never really know how serious we have to take all those rumours which go together with it. After the air attack of yesterday I have received again a nervous phonecall from people I know outside this area. Where are you, in Zagreb, in Pakrac, are you involved, how is the situation. Nothing was noticeable in Zagreb today, I saw or noticed no reaction what so ever. Maybe the only one is that one of the two Bolivian bands wasn't at the main square this morning. But maybe the bands have found out the last week that Zagreb is not rich enough to support two bands. That is I think more likely. And of course the Jesus group wasn't there, but they are I think only playing in the last part of the week. If you walk around the town it could have been happened in BiH or even in Rwanda for that matter. I noticed by the way that the big flag, cross and candle which was so dominated on the main square slowly minimised into a small cross along, without flags or any other recognisable things. It just slowly disappeared and the last week they pushed it even more a side. The two women of the homefront committee to help Croatian soldiers are still on their place, thought. Since I came they are sitting there behind their table. Not many people ever visit them, they are just a part of the scenery of the square, like to horse, still attacking the Hungarians in the wrong direction. Or the two gypsy families from which the women and children still beg in the main street. They found out that they make more money to say in English that they are refugees from Bosna. With all the aid workers and journalist in town at least their income must have raised a bit. How can you resist those children eyes if you just have arrived to help people in this country. Although Saturday evening I saw more money throw in the brand new fountain in the new shopping mall than what I normally see in the shoe box in front of one of those children, but I am not so specialists in how the begging market works. There are now trees planted in front of the major postoffice and also roses, only the light poles are still laying all over the place. The first Christmas commercials are also already shown. I said today to somebody I am waiting for the snow in the mountains to stop the fighting.
