This isknown territory, here I feel at home. Vienna was real abroad. What hashappened in the last days. The results of the elections in Krajina are stillnot known, the Croatian state however has called them being against thebasic laws of Croatia and therefor illegal. A press release stated that theelections were held without any foreign observer. Taduesz Mazowiecki was in Zagreb the last days and had a discussionwith Mate Granic, the foreign minister of Croatia. ARK has been fightingabout half a year against it but it seems that the evictions from former JNAbuildings are going to be stopped. At least for the rest of this year. Thatmeans some work less for the nonviolence group from ARK. 400 Muslim prisoners were exchange from Caplina and Boban'sgovernment promised to free all other prisoners soon. We were looking atthe pictures how the exchange was prepared I saw on the wall of the prison the famous checkerboard but starting with white. Some days agoalready 16 Muslim were exchanged from Gabela. All this former prisoners are brought to the East bank of the river Neretva, were in these days themostly American peace groups, seeds of peace, are busy to spread their leaflets in both parts of the town. After a lot of talks it seems that one ofthem could go to the East bank in an APC from UNPROFOR. I can't help but it sounds a bit strange, peace activists in APC's in order to be able to spread leaflets with a nonviolence message. A says a lot about the situation in Mostar and the quality of the freedom which those POW's hasgot today. Kasic, Puljuv, Suhuvare, Policnik, Posedarje, Debeljak, Maslenica, Zadar,Sinj, Klajic, Umljanovici, Vucipolje, Damjanici and Dragisici, most of thosename will say anything to most of you. It are the names of mostly smallCroatian villages in the Zadar-Biograd, Sinj and Sibinik area, on whichsome shooting has taken place today. With Howitzer and anti aircraftcanons the places where taken under fire. You would probably neverhave found them on the map and propably when you would be able todrive through them you wouldn't even have noticed their existence's. Mostpeople in Croatian also would know were they are. And the soldiers whoshot at them probably only know those houses by the co-ordinates ontheir maps. The convoy from the BiH consulate in Zagreb for Maglaj has left Splittoday and it will probably have a hot road ahead. Near Novi Travnik, anarea where they have to pass through the BiH armija has launched anattack on Croatian positions according the press and the fights are heavyagain. In Sarajevo died 11 people today and when I was janning about mystolen wallet yesterday also 8 people died. Although the Dutch Minister offoreign affairs, Mr. Kooijmans, was in Sarajevo I can't really imagine thathe has noticed it. The difference between the safety of the Internationalsin Sarajevo and the local people is rather big. Ministers can jump in andout, but even seriously wounded civilians are not allowed to be evacuatedby the airbridge (the Bosnian Serbian government seems to haveforbidden that). Jean Cot, the force commander of UNPROFOR blasted about this andother things towards the Bosnian Serbian leaders today. He was furiousabout the fact that again some convoys were stopped, held and returnedby local Bosnian Serb warlords (the "baddies have won" was thestatement of an UNHCR spokesman). And that two times people shot atUNPROFOR convoys on the road from Zvornik to Tuzla. Last but notleast the fact that this week twice aimed shot hit two UNPROFORcheckpoints in middle Bosnia. Also IFRC and UNHCR came out withstatements against the Bosnian Serbs. Yes I am back home again, this isthe languages which I understand. During the day I get a hundred phonecalls it seems from people whoknew that I would return from Vienna today (I was only gone for a day) orjust co- incidentally in the town, like a Dutch, or rather Flemish, VPROreporter, who is doing Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia in ten days for twohour radio. He ask me to come to Hotel Dubrovnik and there I also meet anice Dutch girl, with it seems Slovenian blood, who is now for half a yearliving in Zagreb. She gave a whole explanation about the old VojnikKrajina area. In Vienna I learn a lot about Pakrac and the rest of Krajina, the "famous"free fighter "Trenk" came from Pakrac, he was born in Pozega, fivekilometer away and fought as a kind of land-pirate we was "known" allover Europe in the 16th century. Yes and Vienna was of course veryrelated with that history from this area, and than I realise that I knowabout everything about the Dutch fighting the Spanish and the Englishbut hardly nothing about the century long fight against the Ottoman in thisregion. But I am learning bit by bit.
